India vs Turkey for denim: where each country fits

Turkey suits fast, short-run denim for Europe, while India suits larger volumes and a wide range of weights. Here is how the two compare on range, lead time, volume, flexibility and compliance.

India vs Turkey for denim comes down to what you need: Turkish mills are strong at fast, short-run and fashion-led fabric close to Europe, while Indian mills are strong at volume, cotton access and a wide range of weights. Neither is simply better.

The comparison below is about fit, not figures. We do not quote prices, because a real quote depends on construction, finish and quantity.

Range and development

Both countries make rigid, stretch and comfort stretch denim, and both offer washed and sustainable finishes. Turkey is known for quick development cycles and a fashion focus. India offers a broad range, including heavier weights and basic and mid-market lines.

Ahmedabad is the centre of Indian denim, as explained in why Ahmedabad became India's main denim hub. Ask each mill to show its recent developments in your weight and stretch type, not only its catalogue.

Lead time and distance

Turkey's position next to Europe shortens transport and makes it easier to reorder during a season. Indian denim travels further, so the plan needs more time for freight and for approvals.

Lead time also depends on whether the mill holds yarn and greige stock. A mill that must buy and dye to order will take longer wherever it is.

Volume and flexibility

Indian mills can usually handle large runs and offer competitive scale. Smaller custom runs are possible, but minimums apply, as set out in minimum order quantities for custom denim. Turkish mills often accept smaller, faster orders but may offer less scale on basics.

If your range changes every few weeks, flexibility may count for more than unit cost. If you buy core lines in volume, scale matters more.

Compliance and sustainability

Both countries have mills with recognised certifications and water-saving finishing. Check each mill's actual certificates and test reports rather than the country's reputation. Sustainable denim explains the claims and how to verify them.

Duty and trade arrangements also differ by destination and change over time, so ask your broker to compare the landed cost for each origin. See Indian fabric prices compared with China, Bangladesh and Turkey for the cost drivers.

How do you test the choice with a small order?

Ask each mill for a development sample in your target weight and stretch, with a lab dip or finish, and compare them on handfeel, shrinkage and shade consistency. Request test reports on the same standards for both.

Then place a small trial order with each if you can, and measure real lead times, defect rates and communication. The paperwork on a sample often looks the same; production is where mills differ. Read the mill's own specification sheet against the sample, since a good sample from a special loom setting may not be repeatable at production speed. Ask which machine will run your order and whether the sample came from it.
