Import sanitaryware to the UAE from India: standards and steps

To import sanitaryware to the UAE from India, check the trap and outlet type, flush rules, conformity needs and the order steps. Here is a practical sequence.

To import sanitaryware to the UAE from India, check three things first: whether the design fits local plumbing, whether it meets the water-use and conformity rules for your project, and how the goods will be packed to survive the trip. The UAE is close to Gujarat, but breakage and design mismatch are the usual problems.

We could not verify a single UAE-wide certification rule for ceramic sanitary ware from an official source. Confirm with your clearing agent, the municipality and the project consultant which requirements apply to your product.

What design points matter in the UAE?

Projects in the Gulf often specify water-saving dual-flush toilets and, in many bathrooms, a rear or floor outlet depending on the building. The trap type decides whether the pan fits the drain, as explained in S-trap vs P-trap toilets, and wall-hung pans need a concealed cistern and frame, covered in wall-hung WCs and concealed cisterns.

Flush volume rules differ by country and sometimes by project. Check the flush volume rules by country and ask your consultant for the exact litres they specify. Do not assume the Indian domestic flush volume is acceptable.

What are the order steps?

  • Write the specification: model, colour, trap and outlet, flush type, seat and fittings.
  • Order samples and have them tested for flush performance, water absorption and glaze, as in how sanitaryware is tested.
  • Agree the minimum order and mix of models, using the sanitaryware MOQ guide.
  • Agree packing and the rule for damaged pieces before you pay a deposit.
  • Inspect before loading, and keep the documents in order for the UAE broker.

What about packing and breakage?

Sanitaryware breaks in transit when cartons are loose, partitions are weak or the container is not braced. How sanitaryware is packed explains cartons, partitions and bracing. Write the packing method into the order, and check a sample carton during production.

Plan the UAE delivery too. Project sites often have limited unloading space, so decide whether cartons are palletised and whether the site forklift can take them. Ask the factory to label each carton with model, colour and a code that matches your packing list, so your warehouse can check the count quickly.

Count and photograph on arrival before moving the goods. Handling broken sanitaryware on arrival lists the steps, and what breakage rate is normal helps you set the acceptable rate in the contract.

What about duty?

The UAE applies the common GCC external tariff. The GCC anti-dumping duty our other articles describe covers ceramic and porcelain tiles, so check separately whether any measure applies to sanitaryware, which has a different tariff heading. Ask your broker for the tariff and the exporter's treatment, and see import duties on Indian tiles for how the layers work on tiles.

India and the UAE also have a trade agreement, so ask your broker whether a preferential rate and a specific certificate of origin apply.

Next step

We audit the sanitaryware plant, check samples and test reports, and supervise packing and loading so the cartons match what you approved. To plan a UAE order, book a free sourcing review.
