How to import jewellery from India to the USA and Canada

Importing jewellery from India to the USA or Canada means correct classification, safety limits for lead and cadmium, origin marking and a licensed customs broker.

To import jewellery from India to the USA or Canada, you classify the goods under the right tariff code, make sure they meet the country's chemical safety limits, mark the country of origin, and clear them through a customs broker. The steps are similar in both countries, but the detailed rules differ.

Duty and tariff measures change often, and US measures on Indian goods moved several times in 2025 and 2026. We state no rates here. Check the current position with your broker and the official tariff schedule before you commit to a price.

How do you import jewellery to the USA?

Imitation jewellery sits under heading 7117 in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, and the exact subheading depends on the metal and the design. Your broker confirms the classification and the duty that applies to Indian origin, as in the HS code for imitation jewellery.

The importer of record is legally responsible for compliance. That includes lead limits for children's jewellery under the CPSIA, covered in CPSIA lead limits. Adult jewellery has no mandatory federal lead limit of that kind, but state laws and marketplace policies can apply, such as California Prop 65.

Imported articles must show their country of origin. See country of origin marking for jewellery.

Start with the importer of record, because that role carries the legal duty. It is normally the buyer or a company the buyer names, and it needs a customs bond in the USA. Plan these formalities before you place the order, not while the shipment is at sea. A broker can tell you what is needed in a few days, and the cost of finding out late is a container waiting at the port. Keep the supplier's invoice, packing list and test reports in one folder, and ask for them before dispatch. See the document pack your broker will ask for.

How do you import jewellery to Canada?

Canada uses the same international tariff structure, so the code starts with 7117 as well. The main safety rule is the Children's Jewellery Regulations, which limit total lead to 90 mg/kg and cadmium to 130 mg/kg in children's jewellery. These came into force in November 2018, so confirm the current consolidated text on the Justice Laws website before relying on them.

Canada has its own label and bilingual requirements for some goods, and its own rules on origin marking. Our guide to jewellery rules in Canada and Australia goes through them.

What does Rajkot jewellery export to the USA involve?

Rajkot is a main source of imitation jewellery, and most exports to the USA move by air or sea from Gujarat, usually through a freight forwarder. The exporter prepares an invoice, packing list and shipping bill, while you prepare the entry through your US broker. The full list is in the documents to export imitation jewellery.

Declare the true value on the invoice. Undervaluation causes delays and penalties in both countries.

What should you do before the first shipment?

These steps prevent most first-shipment problems:

  • Choose a licensed customs broker in the destination country and ask them to confirm the classification and duty.
  • Decide whether any item is children's jewellery, and have those pieces tested at an accredited laboratory.
  • Ask the factory for a lead, cadmium and nickel result on the actual materials used.
  • Check that labels and origin marking are right before the goods are packed.
