To import castings to the USA or to Germany, you use the same technical foundation: a drawing, a material grade, a test certificate and a first sample. What differs is the paperwork around it, the way duty and trade measures apply, and what the end customer expects to see.
Customs treatment of castings changes with trade policy, so ask a licensed broker for the current classification and any additional duties before you commit.
What is the same in both markets
A foundry in India that is good enough for either market should offer the same basics. Ask for material test certificates, dimensional reports and a clear pattern ownership agreement. Background reading is in what an EN 10204 3.1 certificate means.
Both buyers also expect traceability from heat number to casting, so that a failure can be traced to one melt.
Importing castings to the USA
For the USA, the importer of record carries responsibility for correct classification, value and country of origin. Imported goods generally need to be marked with the country of origin, and castings are often marked in the mould, which is permanent.
Trade measures on steel and iron products have changed repeatedly, and some apply to derivative products. Check the current position with a customs broker, and check whether your castings are treated as a steel or iron product for these purposes.
US customers frequently quote ASTM material grades, so confirm the Indian foundry can certify to the ASTM grade, not just an equivalent.
Ask the foundry about its experience with American customers. A foundry that has shipped to US buyers will know the marking, packing and paperwork habits, and will not treat them as a surprise.
Importing castings to Germany and the EU
For Germany, goods enter through the EU customs system, so the rules are EU-wide. Buyers commonly specify EN grades and expect EN 10204 certificates. If the castings are for pressure equipment, lifting gear or machinery, the end product has its own conformity route, and your foundry may need to supply specific documents.
The EU carbon border mechanism has covered some iron and steel goods in recent years. Whether your castings fall inside it depends on the product code and the period, so ask your broker to confirm before shipment and not after.
Do not assume that an Indian EN grade certificate is accepted automatically by a German buyer's quality team. Many ask for the laboratory's accreditation details and, for critical parts, a third-party witness at the foundry.
Quality expectations that differ
German buyers often arrive with a formal supplier audit and expect a process-oriented approach, including control plans. Many US buyers are more focused on the part meeting the drawing and on the delivery schedule, though automotive and aerospace customers ask for the same depth as in Europe.
