Halal, kosher, FAMI-QS and RSPO certification for Indian chemicals

Halal, kosher, FAMI-QS and RSPO each cover a different thing: religious rules, feed-ingredient safety and palm oil supply chains. Here is how to check each from an Indian supplier.

Halal chemicals from India, kosher chemicals from India, FAMI-QS and RSPO-certified surfactants are all niche certifications, and each answers a different question. Halal and kosher concern permitted origin and processing, FAMI-QS concerns quality and safety systems for feed ingredients, and RSPO concerns the palm oil supply chain.

Few chemical products need all four. Ask which one your customer actually requires, then check it with the certifier, not just the supplier.

What do halal and kosher certificates cover?

Both certify that a product, its ingredients and its processing meet religious dietary rules. For chemicals, this matters mostly where animal-derived inputs may appear, such as fatty acids, glycerine, stearates, gelatine or enzymes, and in products that touch food, cosmetics or feed.

Certification is issued by a certifying body, and acceptance varies by destination country and customer. Some importers accept only named certifiers. Ask your customer which bodies it recognises before you shortlist suppliers.

The certificate normally names the product and the plant. A company-level letter that says its products are halal is not the same thing.

Cost and lead time are real factors. A certifier must usually visit the plant and review ingredient sources, and renewals happen on a cycle, so a supplier without a certificate may need months to obtain one. If your product is on a short timetable, ask early whether the supplier already holds a certificate that your customer accepts. If it does not, consider whether another product or plant in your shortlist already has what you need.

What is FAMI-QS?

FAMI-QS is a quality and safety system for speciality feed ingredients and premixtures. It applies to producers and traders of ingredients such as vitamins, amino acids, trace elements and additives that go into animal feed.

If your Indian supplier sells into feed, ask for the FAMI-QS certificate and check it with the certification body. Feed rules are set by regulators, so confirm the legal requirements for your market with the competent authority. This site stays at raw-ingredient sourcing level.

What does RSPO certification mean for surfactants?

RSPO is the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Many surfactants and oleochemicals start from palm or palm kernel oil, so buyers with sustainability commitments ask for certified supply. See surfactants made in India for the product background.

RSPO has different supply chain models. Some trace physical certified oil, while others use mass balance or credits. These are not equivalent claims, so ask which model your supplier is certified for and which one your customer will accept. Both the supplier and every trader in the chain must hold a valid certificate.

How do you verify any of these?

The same checks apply to all four:

  • Request the certificate, not a logo, and note the certificate number, scope and expiry date.
  • Verify it with the issuing body or the scheme's public database where one exists.
  • Check that the certificate covers the product, the plant and the activity, such as manufacture or trading.
  • Ask for a batch-linked document or declaration where your customer requires traceability.
  • Record the grade, since the same company may certify some products and not others.
