Glyphosate 95% TC is technical-grade glyphosate with a minimum of 95% active ingredient, which formulators dilute and blend into finished herbicides. To specify it, state the active content, the relevant impurities, the physical form, moisture and the source of manufacture, and check what registration data the supplier can support.
This article gives no figures for glyphosate price in India or agrochemical prices in India. It explains the drivers so you can compare quotes fairly.
What to put in the specification
Start from the agrochemical's international specification where one exists. The FAO and WHO specifications for pesticides set limits for active content and for impurities of concern. Add these items:
- Minimum glyphosate content, measured by a named method such as HPLC.
- Relevant impurities, including N-nitroso-glyphosate and formaldehyde, with limits and test methods taken from the specification that applies to your market.
- Appearance, moisture and pH of a solution.
- The manufacturing source and the registration status that the data package is based on.
Our guide on writing a specification for an agrochemical technical goes through the format, and technical grade versus formulation explains why the TC is not the finished product.
Registration comes first
A pesticide active can usually be imported and sold only if it is registered or approved for that use in the destination country. Rules, approvals and renewals change and differ by country, and some jurisdictions restrict or review glyphosate. Ask the national pesticide regulator what it requires, and ask the supplier which data and source it can support.
Registration usually depends on the source of manufacture, so a different plant can mean a different dossier. Read whether you need product registration before importing agrochemicals before you commit to volume.
What decides generic agrochemical prices
Prices for generic actives such as glyphosate move with a handful of factors:
- Raw materials, which for glyphosate include glycine, phosphorus-based chemicals and formaldehyde, and the energy to process them.
- Capacity and competition among producers, in India and in other origins. See Indian versus Chinese agrochemicals.
- The crop and herbicide season in major markets, which changes demand through the year.
- Environmental and regulatory costs for the producer.
- The quality and documentation behind the TC: a source with a registration package costs more to run than one without.
- Pack, freight and the Incoterm.
How to get a reliable quote
Specify the same minimum content, the same impurity limits and the same pack from every supplier. Ask for a certificate of analysis from current production, and have a lot tested by a laboratory before you place a large order.
Be sure the seller is a producer or can name its source. Our guide on buying generic agrochemicals from India discusses supplier checks. Quote validity is short when raw materials move, so ask how long the offer lasts.
Packing, shipping and testing
Glyphosate technical is normally packed as a powder in lined bags or fibre drums. Check the safety data sheet for the transport classification of your grade, and read whether agrochemicals are dangerous goods before you book freight.
Have the lot tested by an independent laboratory against your specification before you formulate. Compare the result with the supplier's certificate of analysis, and keep a retention sample.
