These six terms come up constantly in Indian agri quotes. An HPS peanut is a hand-picked selected groundnut, a whole kernel graded by sight. Hulled sesame is sesame with its outer skin removed. Mango pulp is the processed flesh of mango. Jowar is sorghum and bajra is pearl millet. De-oiled cake is the protein-rich solid left after oil is extracted from a seed.
The short definitions below also say what to check for each.
What is an HPS peanut?
HPS means hand-picked selected. It is a groundnut grade in which kernels are sorted to remove broken, damaged and discoloured nuts. The term describes the grade, not the variety. See what HPS groundnut is for the grade in detail.
Check the count per ounce or size range, damaged kernel percentage, moisture and an aflatoxin result per lot.
What is hulled sesame?
Hulled sesame is white, skinless seed. It is made by removing the outer hull, either mechanically or by soaking and drying. It is used in tahini, bakery and confectionery. The two production routes are compared in machine-hulled and auto-dried hulled sesame.
Check residual hull percentage, colour, oil quality and Salmonella results.
What is mango pulp?
Mango pulp is the strained flesh of ripe mangoes, heat treated and packed, usually in aseptic drums or cans. It is the base for juices, nectars, ice cream and desserts. It may be unsweetened or sweetened, and the variety matters for flavour.
Check Brix (the sugar measure), acidity, colour and the treatment, and ask whether the pulp is made from a single variety or a blend, because a blend will vary more from batch to batch. The uses are described in the main uses of mango pulp for food manufacturers.
What are jowar and bajra?
Jowar is the Indian name for sorghum, and bajra is the name for pearl millet. Both are drought-tolerant cereals grown in dry regions of India. They are sold as whole grain, flour or flakes for food, and as feed grain. Bajra is covered in what bajra is and who buys it.
Check moisture, foreign matter, broken grain, insect damage and the intended use, since feed and food grades differ. Both grains are often confused with other millets by new buyers, so name the species in the contract and ask for a sample from the actual lot.
What is de-oiled cake?
De-oiled cake (DOC) is what remains after oil is extracted from oilseeds such as rice bran, soybean, mustard or groundnut by solvent. It is high in protein and fibre and is mainly used in animal feed, with some types used as fertiliser. The feed use is explained in what de-oiled cake is and how it is used in feed.
Check protein, oil residue, fibre, moisture and sand, and ask for the extraction method. Rice bran, soybean and groundnut cake are not interchangeable, so name the source seed in the contract. Castor cake is a special case, because it contains a toxin and cannot be fed to animals.
