Food grade guar gum is made and tested to meet food additive purity criteria and microbiological limits. Pharma grade is made to meet a pharmacopoeia monograph under tighter controls. Industrial grade is sold mainly on viscosity, mesh and hydration speed for uses such as oilfield, textile and paper.
The grades come from the same seed. The differences are in raw material selection, hygiene, testing and paperwork, and those differences decide what you can legally do with the product.
Food grade
Food grade guar gum is used as additive E412 in the EU and as a permitted ingredient in the US and most other markets. It must meet the purity criteria your market sets for the additive, such as limits on protein, acid-insoluble matter, moisture, ash and heavy metals.
- Made in a plant with a food safety system and an FSSAI licence for export.
- Tested for total plate count, yeast and mould, coliforms, E. coli and Salmonella.
- Tested for pesticide residues, ethylene oxide and contaminants your market sets limits for.
- Usually sold with a viscosity grade and mesh size suited to the application.
Pharma grade
Pharma grade guar gum is used as a binder, disintegrant or thickener in tablets and liquids. Buyers usually ask for compliance with a named pharmacopoeia, such as the USP-NF or the European Pharmacopoeia, and the current monograph sets the tests.
Expect tighter microbial limits, more documentation and closer change control. Ask whether the plant follows GMP for excipients, and whether it can supply batch records, a stability statement and a change notification commitment. A food grade plant saying "pharma quality" is not the same thing. Ask to see a recent customer audit report from a pharma buyer if one exists.
Industrial grade
Industrial guar is bought for performance. Oilfield users care about hydration rate, viscosity and how the gum crosslinks. Textile printers care about paste flow and wash-out. Paper mills care about strength and drainage.
Industrial grades are often coarser, may contain more husk and need not meet food microbiology. Never let an industrial lot be relabelled for food. It may be safe for its intended use, but it has not been made or tested as food.
How to specify the grade
For the general approach, see how to write a good specification for an agri product.
- State the end use clearly on the purchase order and specification.
- Name the legal standard or monograph the product must meet in your market.
- List viscosity, mesh, moisture and micro limits with the test method for each.
- Ask for a certificate of analysis per batch and verify it with an independent lab.
How we help
We match you with plants that genuinely make your grade, check their certificates on site, and test samples at an NABL-accredited lab against your spec. Request a free sourcing review.
