Food-grade FIBC suppliers in Gujarat: what to expect

Food-grade FIBCs made in clean rooms with BRCGS or FSSC certification are available from several Gujarat plants, and here is how to tell real from claimed.

Yes, food-grade flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) are available from Gujarat, and several plants in the Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Kutch areas produce them for export. These bags are made in a dedicated clean room with metal detection, light table inspection and hygiene controls, and the better plants hold BRCGS Packaging Materials or FSSC 22000 certification. Food-grade capacity is a smaller part of the state's FIBC industry than standard bags, so the buyer's task is to identify the plants that genuinely run a food-grade line rather than those that only claim to.

Gujarat has one of the largest concentrations of woven polypropylene and FIBC capacity in India, with easy access to the ports at Mundra, Kandla (Deendayal) and Hazira. The food-grade segment grew as European and North American buyers of sugar, starch, flour, milk powder, spices and food additives began to require certified packaging.

What makes a bag food-grade

  • Production in a clean room with filtered air, positive pressure, restricted entry and separate storage for food-grade fabric and components.
  • Virgin polypropylene resin and additives that meet FDA and EU food-contact requirements, with declarations of compliance available for each component.
  • Metal detection on the finished bag and light table inspection of the fabric to pick up loose threads, foreign matter and contamination.
  • Hygiene controls such as hairnets, gloves, protective clothing, hand-washing, pest control and a documented cleaning schedule.
  • Fully enclosed packaging of the finished bags, usually with each bale wrapped and sealed before leaving the clean room.

Certification to look for

BRCGS Packaging Materials is the certification most European retailers and food processors recognise. FSSC 22000 and ISO 22000 are also common and are often preferred by multinational food manufacturers. ISO 9001 on its own is a quality management certification and does not mean the plant is food-grade. Ask for the certificate, check that it covers the correct site and scope, and confirm the expiry date, because certificates lapse.

Some plants hold a food-grade certificate but also run standard bags on the same site. That is acceptable as long as the food-grade line is physically separated and the audit covers that separation.

Practical considerations

Food-grade bags usually cost more than standard bags because of the resin, the clean room overhead and the inspection time. Lead times are often longer because the clean room has limited capacity and food-grade orders are scheduled around other work. You may also need a food-grade liner, which adds to cost and lead time.

Specify the resin grade, the liner type if any, the bale packaging and the documentation you need, including declarations of compliance and certificates of analysis. Agree in advance how the bags will be handled between the clean room and the container so that the chain is not broken at the loading stage.

How Creston & Co helps

We visit the clean room ourselves, check that it is running as described and audit the hygiene records. Sealed samples go to an NABL-accredited lab for contamination checks, and we attend pre-shipment inspection and supervise loading at the port.
