Fashion jewellery market size and online growth: reading reports

Market size figures for fashion jewellery vary widely between research firms. Here is how to read them, which questions to ask and what matters for a small importer.

Fashion jewellery market size reports and online jewellery sales growth forecasts disagree with each other, often by large margins. The reason is simple: each firm defines the category differently and uses its own method. We do not quote any single figure here, because none is reliable enough to plan a purchase on.

For a small importer, the better question is whether your specific customer segment is growing, which you can test directly.

Why do market size figures differ so much?

One report may count only costume jewellery, another may include silver and semi-precious pieces. Some measure retail value, others wholesale. Regions, currencies and forecast years differ. A headline number without its definition is not comparable with another.

Many reports sit behind a paywall with a free summary designed to attract attention. The summary seldom shows the method.

What should you check before trusting a figure?

Use these questions on any report:

  • Who published it, and who paid for it?
  • What is included in jewellery, and does it match what you sell?
  • Is the figure retail or wholesale, and in which currency and year?
  • Does the forecast show its assumptions?
  • Does it agree roughly with official sources such as national statistics or customs data?

Where can you get sturdier evidence?

Official retail statistics and customs import data give hard numbers for what is sold or imported. Platform data, such as your own store analytics and marketplace search trends, shows what customers actually look for. Read selling Rajkot jewellery on Amazon, Etsy and Shopify for how to test demand cheaply.

Our note on how to read export data covers the supply side in the same way.

Is online jewellery still growing?

Online selling has taken a larger share of fashion accessories over the past decade in most markets, but we do not give a rate here. Growth is uneven by country and category, and competition online is intense. A larger market does not mean easier sales for you, since more sellers fight for the same customers.

What do small importers need to know instead?

A small importer needs to know four things: who the customer is, what they will pay, what it costs to land the product, and how many pieces sell in a month. None of these come from a market report.

Build your own evidence. Look at marketplace search results, competitor ranges, review counts and the price ladder in your category. Then test a modest range. Our note on price tiers for online jewellery sales helps with the structure.

A report can still help with a high-level view, but let your own sales data decide how much you order.

How do you check a claim quickly?

Search for the original source behind any number. If a blog quotes a report, find the report. If the report quotes a government statistic, find that. If you cannot trace a figure to a source with a stated method, do not use it in a pitch, a loan application or a purchasing decision.
