Denim fabric from India: a buyer's guide to mills and ranges

How to source denim fabric from India, from picking the mill type and weight range to your first order. Includes what Ahmedabad's denim mills do best.

To source denim fabric from India, choose the weight and stretch type you want, then approach a denim mill that already runs that construction, rather than a general weaving unit. Most of India's denim comes from Ahmedabad and its surrounding belt, where indigo dyeing, weaving and finishing sit close together.

Indian denim manufacturers, and any denim fabric manufacturer in India, range from vertically integrated mills that spin, dye, weave and finish to smaller weavers who buy dyed yarn. The type of mill you choose decides your minimum order, your lead time and how much control you have over shade.

Which type of denim mill should you approach?

Large integrated mills run indigo dyeing in-house and offer wide ranges, but they set higher minimums and prefer repeat programmes. Smaller denim manufacturers in India can take lower quantities, though their stretch and finishing ranges are narrower.

Our history of why Ahmedabad became India's main denim hub explains how the cluster grew. In practice, the question that matters is whether the mill dyes its own indigo. If it does not, the shade depends on someone you cannot see.

What ranges can you buy?

The main variables are weight, stretch and dye method. Weights run from light shirting-weight denim to heavy rigid fabric, measured in ounces per square yard. Denim weights in oz available from Indian mills lists the usual spread.

Stretch comes from elastane in the weft, and the amount changes how the fabric behaves after washing. Read rigid, stretch and comfort stretch denim explained before you write a spec. Dye method matters as well: rope dyeing gives the classic indigo look, while slasher dyeing is more even.

How do you place a first denim order?

Work in this order.

  • Send a reference swatch or a written spec with weight, composition, width, weave and finish.
  • Ask for a development sample and approve the shade and hand feel under the same light.
  • Agree the minimum for your quality. Minimum order quantities for custom denim explains why custom shades need larger lots than stock qualities.
  • Order a production lot and test it before shipment, not only the sample.

What checks protect you on denim?

Denim fails in predictable ways. Shrinkage and skew show up after the first wash, shade changes between lots, and indigo crocks onto light fabrics. Ask the mill for its shrinkage and skew results on the lot you are buying, and have an independent laboratory repeat them.

Set a rubbing and wash fastness requirement in the spec. Rope-dyed indigo will always rub off a little, so write down what level you accept. If sustainability matters, see sustainable denim and how it is made for what the claims mean.

How do you source denim fabric safely?

Visit or have someone inspect the dyeing and finishing floors, not only the showroom. Check that the mill owns its looms and indigo range. Our factory audit guide lists what to look at.

Prices depend on weight, yarn, stretch content and quantity. A real quote needs your spec and volume, and we do not publish figures.
