What dates are grown in Kutch, and can they be exported?

Kutch grows mostly seedling dates and some Barhi, harvested fresh at the firm, yellow or red stage in early summer. Export is possible but limited by short shelf life and cold chain needs.

Kutch, in western Gujarat, is India's main date-growing area. Most palms are seedling trees with mixed fruit types, and there are newer plantings of selected varieties such as Barhi. Most fruit is harvested fresh at the firm, crunchy stage known as khalal, while it is yellow or red.

Export is possible, but volumes are small. Fresh khalal dates are perishable, the season is short, and most of the crop is sold within India. Buyers looking for dried, soft dates in large volumes usually source them from other countries.

Why Kutch dates are eaten fresh

Date palms need long, hot, dry summers for fruit to ripen fully on the tree. In Kutch, the fruit reaches the khalal stage in early summer, but the monsoon usually arrives before it can ripen and dry fully on the palm. Rain on ripening fruit causes splitting and spoilage.

So growers harvest at khalal and sell the fruit fresh. Some fruit is boiled and dried to make dry dates (kharek, or chhuhara), a traditional product. Soft, fully ripe dried dates like those from the Gulf are not a typical Kutch product.

Types you will find

  • Seedling or local dates: very varied in colour, size and taste, sold fresh in local markets.
  • Barhi: a selected variety, planted in Kutch through tissue culture and offshoots, eaten fresh at the yellow stage for its sweet, crisp taste.
  • Other selected varieties: some growers trial other varieties, in small volumes.
  • Dry dates (kharek): khalal dates that have been boiled and dried, used whole or in sweets.

What export involves

  • Season: fresh dates are usually available for only a few weeks around June and July, varying by year.
  • Shelf life: fresh khalal dates last only a short time and need cool storage and fast transport, often by air.
  • Plant health: fresh fruit usually needs a phytosanitary certificate, and some countries restrict or set conditions on fresh dates. Check your country's import rules with its plant health authority.
  • Residues: test for pesticide residues against your market's limits.
  • Grading: uniform size and colour are hard to get from seedling palms, so specify grading clearly.

Because the window is short and weather decides the crop, plans can change late. The effect of pre-monsoon rain is covered in how weather and monsoon affect Indian crop prices.

Is it worth it?

For most importers, Kutch dates are a niche product. They suit buyers serving customers who know and want fresh yellow dates, such as some South Asian or Gulf communities. For dried dates in bulk, India is mainly an importer, not an exporter. Start with a small trial shipment and samples sent the right way.

Can I buy sweetened and unsweetened mango pulp?

Yes. Indian processors pack both natural, unsweetened mango pulp and sweetened pulp with added sugar. Natural pulp suits manufacturers, while sweetened pulp is common in retail cans.
