Cottonseed cake is what is left after the oil is pressed or extracted from cottonseed. It is fed mainly to ruminants, such as dairy cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats, because their rumen copes well with the fibre and with gossypol, a natural compound in the seed.

Pigs, poultry and fish can take some cottonseed meal, but only at controlled levels and with attention to free gossypol. For those animals, most formulators prefer soybean meal.

Cottonseed cake is also one of the cheaper protein sources in Indian cattle feed, which is why domestic demand is strong and export offers can be limited in some seasons.

The main forms you will see

  • Undecorticated cake: made from whole seed with the hull. It is high in fibre and lower in protein, and is a traditional Indian cattle feed.
  • Decorticated cake or meal: made after removing most of the hull. Protein is higher and fibre lower.
  • Expeller cake: pressed only, so it keeps more oil and energy.
  • Cottonseed DOC: solvent extracted, with low residual oil and a more concentrated protein.
  • Whole cottonseed: sometimes fed directly to dairy cattle as an energy and fibre source.

Which animals, and why

In ruminants, rumen microbes bind much of the gossypol, so cattle tolerate cottonseed products well. The fibre also suits them. Cottonseed cake is widely used in Indian dairy rations for that reason.

In pigs and poultry, free gossypol can reduce growth and cause health problems. In laying hens it can discolour egg yolks. Formulators limit inclusion, choose meals with low free gossypol and sometimes add iron salts to the diet to bind it. The details are in what gossypol is and why it matters in cottonseed meal.

Where it comes from in India

Gujarat and Maharashtra are major cotton states, and Gujarat has many ginners, crushers and solvent plants. Seed comes off the gins during the cotton season, which in a typical year runs from autumn into spring. Confirm availability for the specific year with the supplier. If you want the seed itself, see whether you can buy cottonseed for crushing or feed from Gujarat.

What to put in the specification

  • Form: undecorticated, decorticated, expeller or solvent extracted, and powder or pellet.
  • Crude protein and crude fibre, both on an as-is basis.
  • Residual oil, to confirm the type of cake.
  • Moisture, often around 10 to 12 percent maximum, for illustration only.
  • Free gossypol, if the meal is for pigs, poultry or fish.
  • Aflatoxin, sand and silica, and salmonella.
  • Lint and hull content, if you need a clean meal.

How we help

We find crushers making the grade of cottonseed cake you need, check how they control seed and moisture, and have samples tested for protein, gossypol and aflatoxin at an NABL-accredited lab. We also supervise loading. Ask for a free sourcing review.

What are the main export markets for Indian oilmeals?

Indian oilmeals go mainly to nearby Asian markets in South East and East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East, where short freight helps. Non-GM soybean meal also finds buyers further away.
