Established psyllium processors in and around Unjha commonly hold the basic Indian licences, an FSSAI licence and an IEC, plus one or more food safety certifications such as ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 or BRCGS. Many also hold organic, kosher and halal certificates, and US FDA food facility registration if they ship to the US.

Not every mill holds all of these. Smaller mills and traders may hold only the basics. Ask for each certificate and check it with the body that issued it.

For a first order, the most useful question is simple: which of these certificates name this exact plant? Ask for copies before an audit visit, so you can check them in advance.

Indian registrations

  • FSSAI licence: needed by food businesses in India, including exporters. See what FSSAI is and whether it matters for export.
  • IEC (Importer Exporter Code): issued by DGFT and needed to export.
  • Export promotion registration: ask which board or council the supplier is registered with for psyllium, and check the certificate with that body.
  • GST registration and factory licences, which show the business and plant are real.

Food safety certification

Buyers in the EU, UK and US usually expect a certified food safety system. Common schemes are ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 and BRCGS. HACCP certification is also common. Each certificate has a scope, a site address and an expiry date. Check that the scope covers psyllium processing at the site you are buying from, not just a trading office.

Other certificates buyers ask for

  • Organic: NPOP for India, and USDA NOP for the US. EU organic needs a certificate of inspection through TRACES. See whether organic psyllium is available.
  • Kosher and halal: common for supplement and food buyers.
  • GMP certificates: some mills supplying pharma or supplement makers hold a GMP certificate. Check who issued it and what it covers.
  • US FDA food facility registration: required for facilities that make food for the US market.
  • Gluten-free certification: offered by some mills. See gluten-free certified psyllium.

How to check a certificate

A certificate shows a system existed on audit day. It does not show what happens on your lot. Traders sometimes share a mill's certificates as if they were their own. Visiting the plant and testing the product remain essential, but these checks come first.

  • Ask for a copy, then check it on the issuing body's website or register.
  • Match the company name and site address to the plant you will visit.
  • Check the scope covers the product and process you are buying.
  • Check the expiry date and the date of the last audit.
  • Ask for the latest audit report summary, not only the certificate.
