Is castor oil hazardous cargo?

Castor oil itself is not normally classed as dangerous goods for container shipping, but castor seed and castor meal are. Bulk tanker shipments follow separate pollution rules.

In most cases, no. Castor oil in drums, IBCs, flexitanks or ISO tanks is not normally classed as dangerous goods for sea freight. Castor beans, castor meal, castor pomace and castor flake are different: they are listed as dangerous goods under the IMDG Code because of ricin and allergens.

Classification can change, and derivatives can differ from plain oil. Always confirm with the supplier's safety data sheet and your forwarder before booking.

Castor oil in containers

Plain castor oil has a high flash point and low toxicity as a liquid. Most safety data sheets for commercial castor oil show it as not regulated for transport. That means a normal booking, without dangerous goods declarations or special stowage.

Even so, shipping lines treat liquid cargo carefully. A leaking flexitank or drum can damage other cargo and the container, so lines often have their own rules on approved flexitank makers, weight and labelling.

  • Ask the crusher for a current safety data sheet for the exact grade.
  • Check section 14 of the safety data sheet, which covers transport information.
  • Give your forwarder the product name, grade and pack before booking.
  • For flexitanks, confirm the line accepts the bag and route.

Castor seed and castor meal

Castor beans and the solid by-products of crushing are listed under the IMDG Code as dangerous goods, under UN 2969, in class 9 (miscellaneous). Shipments need a dangerous goods declaration, correct marking and labelling, and a line that accepts the cargo. Some lines or ports may apply extra conditions. If you buy castor meal for fertiliser, plan for this from the first quote, because it affects freight cost and lead time.

Bulk castor oil by tanker

Large parcels of castor oil move in ship tanks. Here the rules come from MARPOL Annex II and the IBC Code, which classify liquids carried in bulk by their risk to the marine environment. Vegetable oils, including castor oil, are covered by these rules and must go in suitable tankers with proper tank cleaning and discharge records. This is the tanker operator's area, but you should know that your parcel is carried as a regulated liquid.

Derivatives and blends

Hydrogenated castor oil, 12-hydroxystearic acid, sebacic acid and other derivatives each have their own safety data sheet. Most are not dangerous goods, but some chemicals made from castor oil, or blends with solvents, can be. Do not assume a derivative ships like plain oil. For an overview of derivatives, see what hydrogenated castor oil is.

How we help

We collect the safety data sheet for the exact grade, check it with your forwarder and make sure the shipping documents match the cargo. For castor meal, we confirm the dangerous goods paperwork and labels before the container is loaded. To discuss your shipment, ask for a free sourcing review.
