What weight range of castings can Gujarat foundries make?

Across the region you can find castings from under a kilogram to several tonnes. Each foundry has its own window, set by its furnace, moulding method, ladles and cranes.

Taken together, Gujarat foundries cover castings from a few grams in investment casting to several tonnes in large floor-moulded iron and steel. Each individual foundry, though, works in a much narrower window.

The useful question is not what the region can make, but which foundries are comfortable at your weight. A shop working at the edge of its range is where quality problems start.

What sets a foundry's range

The physical plant decides the limits. When you ask about weight, ask about these:

  • Furnace size and number, which limit how much metal can be poured from one melt.
  • Ladle capacity, and whether two ladles can be poured together for a large part.
  • Moulding method and the largest moulding box, which cap the size of the mould.
  • Crane capacity in the moulding, knockout and fettling bays.
  • Heat treatment furnace size, if the part needs annealing or normalising.
  • Machining capacity, if you want finished parts and not raw castings.

Typical bands by process

These are broad patterns, not limits. Always confirm with the foundry what it has actually poured.

  • Investment casting usually covers small parts, from a few grams to a few kilograms, with some units going higher.
  • Shell moulding suits small to medium parts that fit on a heated metal pattern.
  • Automated green sand lines make large numbers of small and medium iron castings with fixed box sizes.
  • Hand-moulded green sand and no-bake moulding handle medium to heavy parts at lower volumes.
  • Floor and pit moulding handle the heaviest single castings, usually in small numbers.

How to check a claim

Ask for photos or a visit showing parts near your weight that the foundry made recently, with the material and the customer's industry. Ask what its rejection rate is at that weight. A foundry that pours mostly light parts may quote a heavy one to win business, then struggle with feeding, shrinkage and handling.

Weight also links to cost and lead time. Heavier parts take longer to mould, cool and fettle, and carry more risk per piece. How weight enters the price is covered in how castings are priced. For a wider view of the region's foundries, see what foundries are in Rajkot and Ahmedabad.

Very light parts have their own issues. Small castings are often poured many to a mould, and a single bad mould affects many pieces. Ask how the foundry tracks which mould and which heat each part came from.

Weight and shipping

Heavy castings bring handling questions beyond the foundry. Very heavy pieces may need special crates, skids and lashing in the container, and sometimes an open-top or flat rack container if they cannot be loaded from the door. Ask about this early, because it affects the foundry's packing and your freight plan. Packing is covered in how castings are packed for export.

How do Indian castings compare with Chinese castings?

Both countries have world-class and poor foundries. India is strong in jobbing and medium-volume iron and steel castings with English-language engineering; China offers wider scale and automation.
