Bentonite from India is a clay mined in several states, with the Kutch district of Gujarat among the best-known sources. A bentonite exporter in India may mine the clay, process it, or only buy and ship it. Ask which, because the answer decides who controls quality.
The grade you need depends on use. Foundry, drilling, pelletising, civil engineering and pet-care products each want different swelling, viscosity and particle size.
Mine, processor or exporter?
Mining in India needs a lease and statutory approvals, and the exact requirements are set by the state and central authorities, so ask the supplier for the lease or the supply contract that links it to a mine. Raw clay is then dried, crushed and milled, and sometimes activated with soda ash to improve swelling. Many exporters buy processed powder from several plants. What bentonite is and where it is mined in Kutch gives the background.
Mine-to-port logistics matter, because most Kutch bentonite leaves through Kandla or Mundra. Ask where the product is stored and how it is protected from rain.
Which grade do you need?
Sodium bentonite swells strongly and is used for drilling fluids, sealing and foundry binding. Calcium bentonite swells less and is used for bleaching and absorbent products unless it is activated. Bentonite grades exported from India sets out the main types, and the swelling index is the figure many specifications use. If you buy for drilling, read API grade bentonite for drilling, since oilfield users work to a published standard.
What should you verify?
- The physical and chemical properties against your standard: moisture, swelling index, viscosity, fluid loss or particle size, as relevant.
- Consistency across at least two production lots, since natural clay varies by seam.
- The source of the clay, so that later lots do not quietly change origin.
- Moisture at loading, which affects the weight you actually receive.
- Whether the lot was tested by a laboratory independent of the seller.
How should it be packed?
Powders ship in 25 kg or 50 kg bags, one-tonne jumbo bags, or loose in lined containers. Each has a different cost and dust profile, so bentonite in bulk or bags is worth reading before you choose. For other Gujarat minerals, see industrial minerals from Gujarat.
What are the common quality problems?
Natural clay varies from seam to seam, so the main risk is that the first lot meets the specification and later lots drift. Moisture is the second problem, because wet powder weighs more and mills badly. A third is contamination with coarse grit or with a different clay when a supplier blends sources. Agree the limits in writing, test every lot against a retained reference, and ask for the lot to be sampled at the loading point. Keep records, because bentonite disputes often turn on which sample was tested.
