There is no single best Incoterm for chemicals. Choose by who can book and manage the freight best, especially for dangerous goods. FCA or FOB give you control. CFR, CIF or CIP let the supplier handle booking from India. DAP suits buyers who want the supplier to manage the whole journey.

Our general guide to FOB, CIF or DAP explains how the terms work. This article covers the chemical-specific points.

What makes chemicals different

  • Dangerous goods need booking approval from the shipping line, which some forwarders handle better than others.
  • The shipper must sign a dangerous goods declaration, so the Indian supplier is involved whatever the Incoterm.
  • Some products need special equipment, such as ISO tanks, heated containers or reefers.
  • Insurance needs care for hazardous and high-value cargo.
  • Port and terminal rules for hazardous cargo add steps and time.

Choosing between the options

FCA or FOB: you choose the forwarder and pay the freight. This gives you control of costs and routes, and is common for experienced importers. Under the Incoterms 2020 rules, FCA is the term intended for containers handed over at a terminal or depot. FOB was designed for cargo loaded on board a vessel, though many traders still use it for containers.

CFR, CIF, CPT or CIP: the supplier books and pays main freight. This can work well for dangerous goods, because an experienced exporter already has DG bookings with lines. Under CIF the seller only has to buy minimum insurance cover, while CIP requires a higher level by default. Check what cover is actually bought.

DAP or DDP: the supplier manages delivery to your site or your port. Fewer Indian chemical suppliers offer these, and DDP means the supplier handles your import clearance, which is hard to do well from abroad.

A practical rule

If you already ship chemicals with a forwarder who handles DG cargo well, buy FCA or FOB. If you are new to chemical imports, CFR or CIF with a capable supplier is often simpler, as long as you check the freight and insurance details. For liquids in ISO tanks, follow the tank operator's practice, since they often arrange the full move.

Always write the Incoterm with its version and the named place, for example FCA Mundra, Incoterms 2020. Confirm DG handling with your forwarder and customs broker before you agree the term. Our article on Gujarat ports for chemical cargo helps you pick the named place.

Risk transfer and insurance

Under every Incoterm, risk passes from seller to buyer at a defined point, not when you pay. Under FCA, FOB, CFR and CIF that point is in India. That means damage at sea is your risk even if the supplier booked the vessel. Make sure your cargo insurance covers the goods from that point, and check that the policy accepts the product's hazard class. Our article on insurance for chemical shipments covers the main covers to ask for.
