Ahmedabad vs Surat textile clusters: what each one makes

Ahmedabad is the cotton, denim and home textile cluster, while Surat is India's centre for polyester and viscose fabrics, printing and sarees.

The short answer is fibre. Ahmedabad works mostly in cotton, including denim, shirting, bottom weights, home textiles and a growing technical textiles segment, while Surat works mostly in synthetics such as polyester georgette, chiffon, crepe and satin, with a large printing and saree trade on top. The two cities are a few hours apart by road, both sit on the same corridor to the ports, and most buyers end up dealing with one or the other depending on what they sell.

Ahmedabad: cotton, denim and larger mills

Ahmedabad grew up around composite cotton mills, and the modern cluster keeps that shape. Several of India's largest denim and cotton shirting producers are here, often as composite mills that spin, weave, dye and finish under one roof. That integration matters for a buyer because one contract covers the whole fabric, and quality responsibility does not pass between three separate companies.

Home textiles such as bedsheets, towels and curtain fabrics, and technical textiles such as filter cloth, coated fabrics and geotextiles, are also based in and around the city. The minimum order quantity (MOQ) at the larger mills is usually higher than in Surat, typically counted in thousands of metres per shade, and lead times for fresh production are typically six to ten weeks.

Surat: synthetics, printing and speed

Surat is a powerloom city. A very large number of small weaving units run polyester and viscose filament yarn into greige fabric, which then moves to process houses for dyeing and printing, and on to embroidery and value addition units. Very little is under one roof, and the trade is organised through fabric markets and brokers rather than through a handful of large mills.

The upside is range and speed. You can get a small run of printed georgette or a new satin quality sampled within days, and MOQs are usually lower than in Ahmedabad. The downside is that your fabric passes through several unrelated hands, so you need to decide who owns the specification and who answers if the shade or the GSM is off.

Printing is Surat's particular strength. Rotary screen printing, digital printing and foil or flock finishes are all available at scale, and most process houses will run a new design on a sample length before a bulk run. For a buyer of printed dress fabric or scarves, that range is hard to match anywhere else in India.

How to decide

  • Cotton, denim, home textiles, workwear or technical fabrics: start in Ahmedabad.
  • Polyester, viscose, blended dress fabrics, printed lengths, sarees, linings or scarves: start in Surat.
  • One accountable supplier from spinning through finishing: look for a composite mill, which usually means Ahmedabad.
  • Low MOQs, fast sampling and many print designs: Surat suits better, with tighter inspection.
  • GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified cotton: the certified process houses are concentrated around Ahmedabad.
  • Stretch or polyester-cotton blends: both cities can do it, so compare samples from each before committing.

Where we fit

We work in both cities and do not favour one over the other. For either cluster we visit the units on a shortlist, confirm they own the machines they claim, send sealed samples to an NABL-accredited lab for composition, GSM and colour fastness, and supervise loading. Buyers get one approved supplier plus one backup, and weekly updates until shipment. A free 20-minute sourcing review is the easiest way to work out which city your product belongs in.
