Osaka has long been called the nation's kitchen, a name from its role as Japan's rice and food trading centre in the Edo period. Today the Kansai region around Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto is Japan's second largest economic area, with its own food makers, importers and distribution network.
Ports and airport
Containers for Osaka usually arrive at the Port of Osaka or the Port of Kobe, which are close together on Osaka Bay. From India they generally tranship at Colombo, Singapore or another Asian hub. Goods then reach warehouses across Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto prefectures by truck. Kansai International Airport, on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, handles air samples and urgent consignments.
Quarantine stations
MHLW has quarantine stations at Osaka, Kobe and Kansai Airport, and the one covering your port of entry receives the food import notification. If the station orders inspection, goods wait until results come back, so pre-shipment tests to Japanese limits reduce surprises. The Japan import guide explains the positive list, the plant quarantine check and the CEPA certificate of origin.
Who uses onion and garlic in Kansai
Osaka is famous for street foods like okonomiyaki and takoyaki, served with thick brown sauces that commonly list onion among their vegetables. Sauce, seasoning and dressing makers in the region use onion and garlic powder for even flavour. Other buyers include:
- Meat processors and makers of gyoza and other frozen foods, using powder, granules and minced onion.
- Instant food and soup makers using chopped and minced onion in seasoning packs.
- Restaurant suppliers for a city known for eating out.
- Indian grocers and restaurants, including in Kobe, which has had an Indian trading community since the early twentieth century.
Climate and storage
Osaka summers are hot and humid, with a rainy season in early summer, and the city often records some of Japan's highest summer temperatures. This is hard on hygroscopic powders. Specify strong inner liners, keep bags sealed until use and store in dry, cool space. Read shelf life of dehydrated onion and garlic and plan shipments to avoid long summer storage where you can.
Buying through Kansai importers
Many Kansai food makers buy through trading companies and importers based in Osaka and Kobe rather than direct. They will want a full process description, test results tied to each lot, and photographs of the plant. A mixed container of onion and garlic forms can make sense for smaller users; see mixing onion and garlic forms in one container.
If you also supply the Tokyo area, see the Tokyo guide.
Next step
Agree the specification and the test plan with your importer, and send the broker the lab report before the ship sails.
We work on the supplier side in India: finding and auditing plants, having each lot tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory to Japanese limits, supervising loading and checking documents, for one written fee agreed in advance. To plan an Osaka order, book a free sourcing review.
