London buyers of dehydrated onion and garlic from India are usually spice blenders, food service distributors, wholesalers serving restaurants, and makers of sauces, curry pastes and ready meals. The rules are the UK rules set out in our UK import guide. This page covers what is particular to London.
Where the container arrives
Many London-bound containers from Mundra, Pipavav or Nhava Sheva land on the Thames at London Gateway or Tilbury. Others arrive at Felixstowe and come in by road, which takes a few hours. The choice is usually made by the shipping line's service, so ask your forwarder which port your sailing calls at.
London Gateway and Tilbury fall under the London Port Health Authority, which the City of London Corporation runs and which covers the tidal Thames. Its officers carry out checks on imported food at the border control posts there, including London Gateway, Tilbury and Thamesport. If your product needs pre-notification in IPAFFS, the entry goes to that authority. Get the document pack right before arrival, because a hold at a busy terminal quickly adds storage and demurrage charges.
Samples and urgent small lots often come by air through Heathrow, which has its own border inspection arrangements. Air freight suits samples, but a full order of onion powder almost always goes by sea.
Who uses onion and garlic in London
London has a very large food service sector and a long-established South Asian food trade. Areas such as Southall, Wembley and Brick Lane are known for Indian and Bangladeshi food businesses, and many suppliers to restaurants work from industrial estates in east and west London. These buyers use onion and garlic powder and granules in spice mixes, marinades and curry bases. Fried onion is a separate product and should be specified separately.
London is also home to sauce makers, sandwich and ready meal producers and seasoning blenders that supply supermarkets. These buyers usually ask for steam-treated powder or granules, tight microbiology limits and a certified plant, often BRCGS. See why UK retailers ask for BRCGS.
Storage in and around London
Much of London's food storage sits outside the centre, in Thurrock, the Lea Valley and near Heathrow, because space inside the city is expensive. Onion powder is hygroscopic, and London's mild, damp winters and occasional summer heat waves both matter. Keep bags off the floor, away from loading doors, and in sealed liners. How to prevent onion powder caking gives the details.
Buying smaller lots
Many London buyers need several forms but not a full container of each. Combining onion powder, minced onion and garlic granules in one container is common. See mixing onion and garlic forms in one container. Each form still needs its own lot number and its own lab report.
If your business also has customers in the North or the Midlands, compare landing at a Thames port with railing containers inland. Our guides for Manchester and Birmingham explain those routes.
