Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley hold most of Malaysia's food manufacturers, importers and spice blenders. If you buy dehydrated onion or garlic for the region, your cargo almost certainly comes through Port Klang. The national rules are in importing dehydrated onion and garlic into Malaysia. This page covers what is specific to Kuala Lumpur.
Port Klang and the road in
Port Klang is Malaysia's largest port, with two main container terminals, Westports and Northport. It lies on the coast of Selangor, roughly 40 to 50 km from central Kuala Lumpur, and containers are trucked inland on the expressways. Port Klang has regular direct services from India's west coast, so cargo from Mundra or Nhava Sheva often arrives without transhipment, which shortens the time a container spends in tropical heat.
Health inspections under FoSIM and MAQIS checks take place at the port. If a consignment is put on hold for sampling, it can wait at the port or at the importer's warehouse until results come back, so allow for this in your stock plan.
Who uses it in the Klang Valley
Manufacturing in the region is spread across Shah Alam, Klang, Petaling Jaya, Subang and the industrial areas around them. Typical users and the forms they favour:
- Seasoning and snack makers: onion and garlic powder and fine granules.
- Processed chicken and meat makers, including nuggets, sausages and burgers: powder and minced garlic.
- Sauce, sambal and spice paste makers: granules and powder.
- Curry powder and spice blenders, many serving the Malaysian Indian community: powder and granules, often alongside chilli and coriander.
- Food service suppliers to restaurants and mamak eateries: chopped and minced onion and garlic.
Indian food in Kuala Lumpur
Indian food is part of everyday eating in the city, from mamak restaurants to banana leaf rice. Brickfields, known as Little India, and the area around Masjid India are long-established centres for Indian groceries and spice shops. Buyers here often know Indian spices well and judge onion and garlic on aroma and colour, so send samples first. Getting agri samples from India explains the process.
Halal is the default
Most Klang Valley manufacturers sell to a Muslim majority market and hold Malaysian halal certification for their own products. They will usually ask for a halal certificate from an Indian body recognised by JAKIM. Confirm the certifier is on JAKIM's current list before you confirm the order.
Humidity and storage
Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, with heavy afternoon rain in the monsoon transitions. Powder picks up moisture fast once a liner is broken. Ask for double liners, inspect bags when the container is opened, and keep stock in a dry warehouse. How to prevent onion powder caking has more detail.
Other cities
Buyers in the north often import through their own port. See our guide for Penang.
