Gdańsk is Poland's main gateway for container cargo from Asia, and a buyer based here can collect Indian dehydrated onion and garlic almost at the quay. That convenience comes with a responsibility: the import checks happen here, so the paperwork has to be ready before the vessel arrives.
For the national rules, read importing dehydrated onion and garlic from India into Poland.
The port
Containers arrive at Baltic Hub, the deepwater container terminal in the outer port, which is among the largest in the Baltic Sea and is being expanded with more yard space and a longer rail siding. Large Asia to Europe vessels can call directly, but cargo from India normally comes via transhipment, so allow roughly five to eight weeks from Mundra, Pipavav or Nhava Sheva. Gdynia, a short distance up the coast, is the alternative Tri-City port.
Who inspects
Sanitary border checks on food at the Tri-City ports are carried out by the Border Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Gdynia, which also runs a control point in Gdańsk. Its checks cover documents, identity and, where needed, physical inspection and sampling before goods are released onto the EU market. Customs clearance is by the National Revenue Administration (KAS).
Importers have reported that sanitary posts at Polish ports work mainly on weekdays, so a container that lands on a Friday may wait. Ask your broker for current hours and pre-lodge documents early. If Indian dehydrated onion or garlic is on an EU increased-check list at the time of shipment, the consignment must also be pre-notified and presented at a designated border control post.
Local users
Pomerania has fish and meat processing, bakeries, and food distributors serving northern Poland and the Baltic region. Fish processors use onion and garlic powder in marinades and coatings, and minced onion in fish salads and spreads. Meat processors want powder and granules for sausages and cured products. Some local traders repack for other Baltic markets, which means labels in several languages.
Storage by the sea
Gdańsk's coastal air is humid for much of the year, and a container left on the quay in autumn can collect condensation inside. Move stock to a dry warehouse promptly, keep it off the floor and away from doors, and keep liners closed. See how dehydrated onion is packed and shelf life of dehydrated onion and garlic.
Sending goods inland
Container trains run from Baltic Hub to inland terminals across Poland, including the Warsaw area, so a Gdańsk importer can clear at the port and forward to customers elsewhere. If your main customers are in the capital, read the Warsaw guide. Labels for sale in Poland must be in Polish.
