Dehydrated onion and garlic from India for buyers in Dubai

Dubai buyers receive Indian dehydrated onion and garlic through Jebel Ali, register products with Dubai Municipality before arrival, and often re-export part of each load.

For a Dubai buyer, Indian dehydrated onion and garlic is a short sea voyage away, but clearance depends on work done before the ship leaves. Dubai Municipality expects the company and each product to be registered in its food import system before the goods land, and an unregistered product can be held or sent back.

Arriving through Jebel Ali

Almost all containers from Mundra, Pipavav and Nhava Sheva arrive at Jebel Ali, the largest port in the region. Dubai Municipality inspects food consignments at its Jebel Ali office near the port gates, where inspectors can open containers and take samples. Air samples and urgent small lots come through Dubai International or Al Maktoum airport, each with its own inspection point.

Goods consigned to a company inside the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) can be stored there and re-exported without being imported into the UAE market. Many Dubai traders use this to break a container into smaller lots for buyers in Oman, East Africa, Iraq or the wider Gulf. Tell your supplier early whether the load is for the local market or re-export, because labels, certificates of origin and registrations may differ.

Who uses it in Dubai

Dubai has a large food service and catering sector serving hotels, airlines and restaurants, plus spice blenders and packers who sell under their own brands across the Gulf. The city's big South Asian community supports a strong trade in Indian-style masalas and ready mixes. Blenders favour powder and granules; caterers and ready meal makers use minced and chopped. The old spice souk in Deira is a reminder that the spice trade here is centuries old, though industrial buyers now work through warehouses in Al Quoz, Ras Al Khor and JAFZA.

Heat, humidity and storage

Dubai summers combine high heat with high humidity near the coast. Onion and garlic powder pick up moisture fast and can cake if a container sits on the quay or a warehouse is not air-conditioned. Ask for double liners or foil bags for powder, keep the dwell time at the port short, and store in a climate-controlled warehouse. See how to stop onion powder caking and shelf life of dehydrated onion and garlic. Dubai Municipality has also applied minimum remaining shelf-life checks at entry, so ship fresh stock.

Labels and paperwork

  • Arabic on the label, alone or with English, following GSO 9. Stickers are usually fitted before export.
  • A CEPA certificate of origin if you want preferential treatment under the India-UAE agreement.
  • Lab reports from an NABL-accredited lab tied to the lot numbers on the bags.
  • A halal certificate if the pack or your customer claims halal.
